GTM Engineer job description, skills and salary bands
What belongs in a GTM engineer job description: the systems they own, the tools that matter, what it pays in the US, and what separates a builder.
- Salary
- from $110,000
- Where the band goes
- Set by the rung, not the title. The ladder below says which is which, and the benchmarks post shows how each band was built.
Tools you will see on every CV
- Clay
- Apollo, Clearbit or another enrichment source
- Instantly, Smartlead or Outreach for sequencing
- Python
- SQL
- n8n, Make or a comparable automation layer
- APIs and webhooks
- HubSpot or Salesforce
Which is why the tool list is the least useful part of a CV for this role. Everyone has the same one.
What a GTM engineer actually builds
Signal detection, enrichment pipelines, routing logic, sequencing infrastructure, and the plumbing between systems that were never designed to talk to each other. The output is a machine that other people operate.
The distinction that matters is between building and configuring. A large number of people with the title can connect tools through a visual builder. Fewer can design a system that degrades gracefully when a data source goes stale, and fewer still instrument it well enough to notice when it has.
If you are still deciding whether this is the role you need at all, the longer version of that question, covering the definition, the market data and the hiring test, is in what is a GTM engineer.
Why the title confuses people
There is no qualification and no standard. The material published about GTM engineering is largely written by the vendors selling the tools it uses, which is reasonable of them and a poor basis for evaluating a candidate. That gap is substantially why Rareix exists.
Good and bad
What separates the two, in this role specifically.
These are the distinctions the rubric is built around. All of them are behavioural, so a CV cannot show them and a recorded session can.
- 01 Strong
Builds systems that keep working when a vendor changes an API or a data source degrades. Assumes things break and instruments accordingly.
WeakBuilds an impressive chain of tools that works on the demo data and silently produces nonsense six weeks later. Nobody notices until a prospect complains.
- 02 Strong
Knows the cost per record and the failure rate of every enrichment step, and can tell you which step is not worth paying for.
WeakEnriches everything with everything because the credits are there, producing expensive noise and a database nobody trusts.
- 03 Strong
Treats deliverability, consent and sending reputation as constraints on the design, not as somebody else problem.
WeakOptimises for volume, burns the domain, and leaves the company with a deliverability problem that takes months to unwind.
- 04 Strong
Can explain to a non-technical VP what the system does and what it cannot do, without either mystifying it or overselling it.
WeakDescribes the stack. Cannot say what business outcome it changed.
What it is advertised as
The same job, at four rungs, under whatever title the advert reached for.
Titles for this work are not standardised, and the rung matters more than the wording. These are the variants currently live in the UK market, so you can search for the right one and recognise the wrong one.
- 01
First GTM engineer
Builds the outbound and enrichment infrastructure from nothing, usually at a startup, and often arrives from a BDR or growth seat with two to four years behind them rather than from software.
- GTM Engineer
- Go-to-Market Engineer
- Founding GTM Engineer
- 02
Inside a RevOps title
The most common way this work is advertised in the UK. The engineering is real, the title says RevOps, and candidates searching for GTM engineer roles never see it.
- Revenue Operations Manager, GTM Engineering
- RevOps Architect, GTM Systems
- Revenue Operations GTM Engineer
- 03
Senior or staff
Owns systems other people operate and is judged on whether they still work six months later, when a vendor has changed an API and a data source has quietly degraded.
- Senior GTM Engineer
- GTM Staff Engineer
- Senior GTM Operations Manager
- 04
Head of or Director
A small number of these exist and they are usually a RevOps leadership role with an engineering bias. Worth checking whether the company wants a builder or a manager of builders, because the advert rarely says.
- Director of Go-to-Market Engineering
- Head of GTM Engineering
- Head of GTM Systems
Questions
Hiring a gtm engineer.
- Is GTM engineering just a new name for growth hacking?
- No, though the confusion is understandable. The distinguishing feature is that a GTM engineer builds durable systems that other people operate, rather than running campaigns themselves. The output is infrastructure, and it is judged on whether it still works in six months.
- How is it different from RevOps?
- RevOps owns the process and the numbers. GTM engineering builds the automated systems that execute the process: enrichment, routing, sequencing, signal detection, data pipelines between tools. In companies under about 50 people it is often one person doing both.
- Why is the role so hard to hire for?
- Because it is new enough that there is no shared definition, and because the tooling turns over fast enough that tool experience ages badly. Only a minority of practitioners report that their own company understands the role, which tells you how much interviewing for it is guesswork.
- What does a GTM engineer pay?
- Above RevOps at equivalent seniority, roughly $110,000 to $200,000 base, driven by a very thin supply of people who can genuinely build rather than configure.
