Role · Marketing Operations Manager
Marketing Operations: what the role does and pays
What marketing ops owns, why attribution is the hardest part of the job, what it pays in the US, and what separates a strong hire from a tool admin.
- Salary
- from $85,000
- Where the band goes
- Set by the rung, not the title. The ladder below says which is which, and the benchmarks post shows how each band was built.
Tools you will see on every CV
- HubSpot, Marketo or Pardot
- Dreamdata, Bizible or another attribution tool
- 6sense, Bombora or another intent source
- A CDP such as Segment
- SQL
- Looker, Tableau or Power BI
- Google Analytics 4 and the ad platform APIs
Which is why the tool list is the least useful part of a CV for this role. Everyone has the same one.
Attribution is the whole difficulty
Every other part of marketing ops is tractable. Campaign infrastructure, lead routing, consent management and reporting are all solvable with care.
Attribution is not solvable, only improvable, and the job is to be honest about that while still producing a number people can spend against. That combination, analytical rigour and the willingness to say a comfortable number is wrong, is what the assessment is built to surface.
Good and bad
What separates the two, in this role specifically.
These are the distinctions the rubric is built around. All of them are behavioural, so a CV cannot show them and a recorded session can.
- 01 Strong
States the confidence interval on attribution and still gives a decision-useful answer. Knows the difference between correlation in a dashboard and incrementality.
WeakReports platform-attributed conversions as fact, including when they sum to more than total revenue.
- 02 Strong
Treats consent and preference management as part of the data model, not a compliance checkbox bolted on at the end.
WeakDiscovers a consent problem during a data subject request, when the systems have already been built.
- 03 Strong
Builds lead scoring against closed-won data and revisits it when conversion shifts.
WeakBuilds lead scoring in a workshop and never validates it against outcomes.
What it is advertised as
The same job, at four rungs, under whatever title the advert reached for.
Titles for this work are not standardised, and the rung matters more than the wording. These are the variants currently live in the UK market, so you can search for the right one and recognise the wrong one.
- 01
Executive or analyst
Builds and ships campaigns in the automation platform and keeps the database clean. Hands on the tool all day, and rarely asked whether the reporting means anything.
- Marketing Operations Executive
- Marketing Operations Analyst
- Marketing Operations Associate
- 02
Manager
Owns the platform, the lead lifecycle and the scoring model, and is the person who has to defend the attribution number in a room that wants a bigger one.
- Marketing Operations Manager
- Marketing Operations Specialist
- Lifecycle Marketing Operations Manager
- 03
Senior manager
Owns the martech stack end to end and its joins into the CRM and the warehouse. Usually the first rung where the attribution method is theirs to choose rather than inherit.
- Senior Marketing Operations Manager
- Sr. Marketing Operations Manager
- GTM Operations Manager, Marketing
- 04
Head of or Director
Owns the measurement framework the whole marketing budget is argued over, and the operating model beneath it. Sits alongside demand generation rather than under it.
- Head of Marketing Operations
- Director, Marketing Operations
- Director, Marketing Operations & Technology
Questions
Hiring a marketing operations manager.
- Is marketing ops part of RevOps?
- In companies that have a RevOps function, usually yes, as one of its three pillars. In consumer businesses marketing ops is often the senior ops role outright, because there is no sales pipeline for RevOps to own.
- What is the hardest part of the job?
- Attribution, and specifically being honest about it. The job requires telling commercial stakeholders that a number they have been managing against for two years is not measuring what they think, then giving them something better to use.
- Does the role need SQL?
- Yes for anything above junior. Marketing data volumes and the number of systems involved make spreadsheet-only work untenable quickly.
- What does marketing ops pay?
- Roughly $85,000 to $150,000 base, with the top of the band in businesses running paid acquisition at scale where the analytical bar is highest.
