Roles

Five roles, and the arguments about what they mean.

These titles overlap, companies use them inconsistently, and the wrong one on a job advert is a common reason a search goes nowhere. Each page says what the role is accountable for, what it pays, and what separates a strong hire.

Titles are not the problem

Two companies using the same title often want completely different people.

So the brief call starts with what the role has to fix. The assessment then measures capability against that problem, and the title becomes a question of what to put on the advert.

How we test

What they get advertised as

The same five jobs, under a great many names.

Taken from live UK listings rather than invented. If the title you were given is in here, the page it sits under is the one to read.

Questions

Which role, and what it is called.

What is the difference between RevOps and sales ops?
Sales ops owns the sales function: territory, quota, forecast and the process reps work inside. RevOps owns the whole revenue system across marketing, sales and customer success, including the handoffs where most value leaks. Plenty of companies rename sales ops to RevOps without widening the scope, so it is worth asking what the person will actually be allowed to change.
Does a CRM manager work in marketing or in revenue?
Both, depending on who wrote the advert, and this is the most expensive title confusion in the field. In UK consumer businesses a CRM manager usually runs retention marketing on Braze or Klaviyo. In B2B revenue teams the same title usually means owning the sales platform. The two candidate pools barely overlap. Name the platform in the advert and the problem disappears.
Is GTM engineer a real job title or a rebrand?
Real, and still rare as a standalone title in the UK. Most of the work is advertised inside a revenue operations title, with the engineering described in the body rather than the heading. Candidates searching for GTM engineer roles never see those adverts, which is one reason the role is hard to fill from applications alone.
Which of these 5 roles do we actually need?
Describe the problem rather than picking a title. If the forecast is wrong, it is sales ops. If the numbers disagree between teams, it is RevOps. If the marketing spend cannot be defended, it is marketing ops. If the platform itself is the bottleneck, it is a CRM or systems hire. If the volume needs automating, it is GTM engineering. Sometimes the answer is none of them, and we would rather say so on the call.
Why do the same titles pay so differently?
Because a single title covers several rungs. Across these 5 roles we track 68 live title variants running from analyst and coordinator through to head of and director, and the same words appear at both ends. A band quoted without a rung attached is close to meaningless, so every band on this site is stated at a named level.

Not sure which one you need? That is a good use of the brief call.

Describe the problem and we will tell you which role solves it, including when the answer is none of them.
