Set by the rung, not the title. The ladder below says which is which, and the benchmarks post shows how each band was built.

Tools you will see on every CV

  • Salesforce, and its forecasting, or a dedicated tool like Clari
  • Excel and Google Sheets, still, and heavily
  • SQL
  • CPQ, where the product is configurable
  • Outreach, Salesloft or a comparable sequencer
  • Gong or another conversation tool

Which is why the tool list is the least useful part of a CV for this role. Everyone has the same one.

The forecast is the job

Everything else sales ops owns is in service of one question: how much will close, and how confident should we be. Territory design, quota, pipeline hygiene and CRM process all exist to make that answer trustworthy.

A sales ops hire who treats the forecast as a collection exercise rather than a model will produce a number that is precisely as good as the optimism of the sales team, which is to say not good.

Good and bad

What separates the two, in this role specifically.

These are the distinctions the rubric is built around. All of them are behavioural, so a CV cannot show them and a recorded session can.

  • 01
    Strong

Owns the forecast as an analytical product: knows where it has been wrong historically, in which direction, and by how much.

    Weak

Collects the forecast. Aggregates what reps typed in, presents it, and treats the accuracy as a rep behaviour problem rather than a modelling one.

  • 02
    Strong

Designs territory and quota so it survives contact with a hiring plan and a leaver. Models the edge cases before they happen.

    Weak

Builds a beautiful territory plan for the current headcount that has to be rebuilt from scratch the first time someone resigns.

  • 03
    Strong

Reduces what reps have to enter, and gets better data as a result. Understands compliance with a process is a design outcome.

    Weak

Adds required fields to enforce hygiene, and gets fiction entered at speed instead.

What it is advertised as

The same job, at four rungs, under whatever title the advert reached for.

Titles for this work are not standardised, and the rung matters more than the wording. These are the variants currently live in the UK market, so you can search for the right one and recognise the wrong one.

  1. 01

    Coordinator or executive

Order processing, quote support and CRM administration. Real work, frequently confused with the manager rung on a job advert, and paid a long way below it.

    • Sales Operations Coordinator
    • Sales Operations Administrator
    • Sales Operations Executive
  2. 02

    Analyst

Produces the reporting the forecast is built from and usually spots the problem in it first. The rung where analytical depth is either there or it is not.

    • Sales Operations Analyst
    • Junior Sales Operations Analyst
    • Sales Operations Associate
    • Sales Operations Specialist
  3. 03

    Manager

Owns the forecast, territory and quota, and the process reps have to live inside. Judged on whether the number holds up, not on how tidy the CRM looks.

    • Sales Operations Manager
    • Senior Sales Operations Manager
    • Sales Operations Manager, EMEA
  4. 04

    Head of or Lead

Owns planning and capacity alongside the sales leader, and often enablement too, which is a different job bolted on and worth separating in the advert.

    • Head of Sales Operations
    • Sales Operations Lead
    • Senior Manager Sales Operations
    • Head of Sales Operations & Enablement

Questions

Hiring a sales operations manager.

Should we hire sales ops or RevOps?
If the problem is contained inside the sales function, forecast, territory, quota, pipeline hygiene, sales ops is the right and cheaper hire. If the problem lives in the handoffs between marketing, sales and customer success, a sales ops hire will not have the mandate to fix it.
Does sales ops need SQL?
Increasingly yes, though less critically than RevOps. A sales ops manager who can only work in the CRM UI will be dependent on someone else for any question that requires joining data.
Is a former rep a good sales ops hire?
Often, because they know where reps lie to the CRM and why. The risk is analytical depth. We test that directly rather than assuming it either way.
What does sales ops pay?
Roughly $85,000 to $145,000 base at manager level, generally below RevOps at equivalent seniority because the scope is narrower.
